The Hobbit: Balin and the Goblin King

Hi all

Today I bring a couple of models that I've just finished. From the title of the post I'm sure I don't really need to tell you what models I've been painting. I've been working on the Goblin King for the last couple of weeks doing a bit at a time as I've had the time. Balin I started at around 11 last night and had him almost finish by about 1 this morning.

Up first is Balin. I'm really happy with how he's turned out. He was a relatively simple model to paint as he's essentially all red. However doing him all the same shade of red would have looked a bit odd so while both share the same basecoat and wash they are highlighted differently. From the pictures I had of Balin his outer robe was darker while his inner robe was lighter a bit lighter in colour. For the inner robe I added orange to the mix to lighten it while the outer robe had a little grey added to it. His beard was just painted grey with white added over the top on the highest parts. As I said at the start I'm really happy with how he's turned out. These plastic characters from the Escape from Goblin Town box are all really nice and after painting Bilbo and Balin I can say I'm really looking forward to painting the rest of the Dwarves.

Next up we have the Goblin King. I think I like this plastic version of the model rather than the Finecast version that was released a couple of months ago. Overall I'm fairly happy with how he's turned out though I'll admit that I could maybe have done a better job on some area's of the skin. Up close some parts don't look too good but from a table top kind of distance the model actually looks pretty good. And seen as I don't ever intend for this model to be on display or show it off that's good enough lol. Of all the parts of the model, of which most is skin, I'm really happy with how the facial area turned out the most. The various washes I applied to the skin have all come together nicely in this area and have really helped to define the misshapen face the Goblin King has.

Well that's it for Balin and the Goblin King. One a side note I have a few projects on the go at the minute. I'm currently aiming to speed up the painting of my Dark Eldar which has dropped right off since I finished the Razorwing Jetfighter. I've also just picked up a couple of units for the Imperial Fist joint project with Zebulon. And the final big project I currently have is right at the beginning so far but I'm hoping to get that properly underway within a couple months. There'll be a post sometime soon so keep watching for that.

Well that's it for this post. As always thanks for taking the time to have a look and please feel free to leave any comments, be they good or bad or somewhere in between.

Start Collecting Skitarii Review

Hey all, today I'm giving my little review on the new Start Collecting Skitarii box. Firstly for a GW price of  £50 ($85) these are exceptional value, in this box set the Dunewalker is £40, Rangers/Vanguard £23.50 and the Dominus £22. Even at £50, that's a £35.50 saving. If you're like me and bought it from an online store ( Goblin Gaming for me, 20% discount and £3.90 postage, just under 50% off standalone retail price)

Scenery: Imperial Sector Buildings WIP

Hi all

Its been a while since anything new was posted on SotA which I think has been due to both myself and Zebulon having a little break from doing anything major. I've been tinkering with a few bits and pieces for the last few weeks and now find myself ready to get back into the swing of things.

So first up are the buildings from the Imperial Sector box. I was lucky enough to find this box in my local store at the old price of about £52 rather than the new £70 price. I hadn't intended to buy it but I knew I'd regret not buying it. It took me a couple of weeks to assemble the buildings which was slow by my standards (due to the decreased nature of hobby activities).

So lets get on with the pictures.

Slaughterpriest Painting Challenge

Hey all, we're back today with another of myself and Blackmane's painting challenges. Since we both picked up the shiney new version of White Dwarf, we though it fitting to do a challenge based of the Slaughterpriest that came with it.
We have 2 weeks from today to complete the model in anyway we see fit and then we will put it up as a poll to see who the victor is!
On a slightly related note, myself and Blackmane have both moved house in the last couple of months each gaining a hobby room/studio. This explains our lack of posts recently and should allow us both increased content for our little blog which we hope you will enjoy going forward.
Paint brushes at the ready..... GO!!
